As some of you may know, I grew up in Florida and my family still lives in the panhandle. While they were lucky enough to be on the western side of Hurricane Michael, and so avoided most of the damage, watching the area I know and love get hit so hard was really rough. It breaks my heart to see so many of my favorite places just gone or severely damaged.
The area is in full clean-up and help mode now, and it is really incredible to see. If you are interested in donating, here are a couple of organizations from the area that I know personally and know are helping with the disaster:
Save Our Cats and Kittens of Fort Walton Beach (SOCKS) (wonderful small local rescue that is taking in displaced cats and kittens)
Alaqua Animal Refuge (amazing local refuge for all kinds of animals, including cats, dogs, rabbits, pigs, horses, etc.)
ETA: I just learned that Seacrest Wolf Preserve took a very bad hit and could really use some help, if you are able. All wolves except one are accounted for, but they can’t use the enclosures due to the damage, so have to keep them in pens until repairs can be made.
Further ETA: This is a link to help the service members at Tyndall AFB in Panama City, which was totally destroyed, including the living areas with all of their stuff, so if you want to help some great people, try this link fo the Air Force Enlisted Village, which is helping out and just an amazing organization in and of itself: www.afev.us/help
